I am going for CCNP. Cisco had a foundation R/S exam 640-409, is the 642-891 similar to the old foundation R/S exam?
Yes. 642-891 is similar to Foundation R/S. But not the same.
Foundation R/S had topics from BCSI, BCMSN and BCRAN.
642-891 is primarily aimed as a CCNP/CCDP Combo recertification exam. This exam can also be used as a replacement for individual BSCI and BCMSN exam. So this test does not give you BCRAN. You will have to take BCRAN separate.
If going for CCNP, you can take,
642-891 (takes care of routing and switching)
remote access exam
price you pay is 187.50 + 125 + 125 = 437.50$
If you go for individual CCNP exams,
price you pay is 125 * 4 = 600$
But usually preparing for a test (like 642-891) takes more time for newbies, compared to time required to prepare for individual BSCI or BCMSN test.
The choice of which test to take, is a trade off of Time versus Money.
Thank you very much, your reply is very informative. I have quite a few years working with cisco equipment so I wouldn't say I fall into the newbie bracket. I had prepared for the 640 CCNP series of exams, but illness set me back a few months, so as well as saving money I'd like to shorten the exam time.
